  16. <p>An appeals court rules a magazine liable for a public offer
  17. to kill
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals in
  20. Montgomery, Alabama, has ruled that Soldier of Fortune magazine
  21. will have to pay $4.37 million in compensatory damages to Michael
  22. and Ian Braun. Their father, a businessman, was murdered in a
  23. contract killing set in motion by a 1985 classified ad headed GUN
  24. FOR HIRE and offering the "special skills" of a "professional
  25. mercenary." Two other businessmen, the advertiser, Richard
  26. Michael Savage, and an associate of his, were convicted of
  27. conspiracy in the murder. Soldier of Fortune, the court ruled,
  28. was negligent in publishing an ad that clearly indicated the
  29. advertiser was "ready, willing and able to use his gun to commit
  30. crimes" and presented a "danger of harm to the public."
